Have you ever dreamed of owning your own business? Well, when you deposit money in a savings account at DMPOCU, you actually buy a “share” of the credit union…which makes you part-owner. So congratulations! As a member of Des Moines Police Officers’ Credit Union, you’re also a small business owner!
We’ve been around 80 years so we really know our stuff. We began serving employees of the Des Moines Police Department and thanks to our loyal members, we’ve become a multi-million dollar financial institution and are now able to serve several other public safety agencies within the state of Iowa.
From the outside our credit union may look like any other financial institution – we offer savings accounts, checking accounts, debit cards, loans, and a lot of other products and services that help you manage your money and buy the things you want and need. However, if you look closer, you’ll find the structure of credit unions is quite unique. For instance, Des Moines Police Officers’ Credit Union has an exclusive membership base, which means we can’t serve just anyone – you have to work as, or be related to a public safety professional in Iowa in order to be a member of our credit union. So, when you bank with us, you’re banking with people who have something in common with you!
As a not-for-profit cooperative, we’re also able to offer competitive loan and savings rates and lower/fewer fees to our members, because as part-owner, you’re in charge around here. You see, credit unions were founded on the principal of “people helping people” and we very much believe in those same principles today.
