From a phone … to a Porsche!

Whoa. Check this out:
Steven Ortiz, 17, used Craigslist to trade his way up from an old cell phone to a Porsche. It took him 2 years of bartering like crazy, but it appears that the effort was worth it.

Commercial Mania

I love streaming my favorite shows on Hulu.com, and the best part is bypassing all those LONG commercial breaks. But this got me thinking; how much money do companies pay for TV ad spots? Well for one, American Idol charges $642,000 for a 30 second commercial while Dancing With the Stars sold ad time at $209,000 per spot. And tipping the charts of advertising dollars was the Lost series finale, with spots selling at $900,000for a 30 second commercial!

Here’s a list of some other shows and prices for 30-second commercial spots:

The Simpsons: $201,920

Two and a Half Men: $226,635

The Biggest Loser: $128,295

So You Think You Can Dance: $132,558

Glee: $127,350

The Office: $191,236

Flash Forward: $175,724

V: $110,450

How I Met Your Mother: $145,106

The “Netflix of Textbooks”

Hey guys! I’m taking a break from the Top 10 lists to share a link with you this time: chegg.com. Chegg is a college textbook site that offers rentals on books and operates similar to Netflix. Yep, you rent the book, they send it in the mail, and once you’re done, you send it back via UPS with a return label they provide for you on their website. Also kinda cool: They plant a tree each time you rent a book!

So seriously, file this one away so you’re totally prepared for when you’re off to college – it’s no secret that textbooks are one of the biggest college expenses for students each year. And since college isn’t cheap, you’ll want to know as much as you can about saving money anywhere you can! If you’re not sure about chegg, check out sites like ecampus.com and alibris.com to save money on your books – they often have MUCH better deals than the books sold on campus.

Use your book savings each semester to throw into the “paying-off-your-student-loan” fund! :)

Sweet Prom Dress

With prom right around the corner, us ladies can expect to spend anywhere from $150 to $400 for a dress. But for some of us who are on a budget, creativity is the way to go. For Elizabeth Rasmuson from Iowa, that’s exactly what she did to create her dream dress. Check out this video to see how she turned gum wrappers into one sweet dress!

To see other creative prom dresses and tuxes, check out the Stuck at Prom Duck Tape brand contest.

Any other creative ideas you want to share for prom? We’d love to hear from you!

Have $1,400… will farm

If you think about it, $1,400 will get you quite a bit like 147 movie tickets, 1,414 iPhone apps, 2 iPads or 7 Wii consoles. But who needs all that stuff when you can get loads of virtual artichokes, pumpkins, strawberries, pigs and turnips? In the case of a 12-year old British boy, that’s exactly how much he racked up in debt while playing Farmville. To add an even crazier twist to this story, he managed to get his mom’s credit card (without permission) to fund his habit after using up all his savings… I guess he wasn’t patient enough to wait around for the next harvest! So fellow farmers, let this be a cautionary tale to hang on to your cash (no matter how bad you need that tractor!) And just in case you were curious, Zynga, the company that created Farmville is worth about $3 billion.

Happy farming!

Top 10 Best Selling “American Idols”

Since I’m a big fan of the Top 10 Lists, I thought you all might be interested in the latest one I found:  The Top 10 Best Selling American Idols.

I can’t say I’m a huge fan of the show – but a lot of my friends are … so this one’s for you! Let’s just say that if the average price of an album is $10, that translates into a LOT of cash for the idols listed below!

Check it out:

10. David Archuleta — 962,000 albums sold

8. Jordin Sparks — 1.2 million albums sold (tie)

8. Kellie Pickler — 1.2 million albums sold (tie)

7. David Cook — 1.3 million albums sold

6. Fantasia Barrino — 2.3 million albums sold

5. Ruben Studdard — 2.5 million albums sold

4. Clay Aiken — 4.9 million albums sold

3. Chris Daughtry — 5.3 million albums sold

2. Kelly Clarkson — 10.4 million albums sold

1. Carrie Underwood — 10.5 million albums sold

Surprised? Think this season might have a winner capable of outselling them all?

The $40,000 Video Game

YahooGames! recently posted a story about someone in Kansas who sold an old Nintendo video game on eBay. OK, so what’s the big deal, right? There are probably thousands of video games sold on eBay everyday. Hold on … this one sold for $41,300! Yes, you read that correctly. FORTY-ONE THOUSAND THREE HUNDRED DOLLARS. The game is called “Stadium Events” and is a rare collectors item. So what’s the lesson here? Well, you never know where you might find a collectors item worth thousands of dollars, so be careful what you throw away. By the way, you gotta ask yourself, who would spend over $40,000 for a video game in the first place? You have to REALLY like old video games to drop that kinda cash. So what does $41,300 equal:

You could buy:

  • 138 PS3 consoles
  • 826 years of Xbox Live
  • 840 Mario games for your Wii
  • 103 Apple iPads

Or, you can save your money and MAKE tons of money in interest. Just saying.
